Hagaman Ancestry

From the HAGAMAN family records available to me the following seems to constitute the male line of descent beginning with the first immigrant to America, ADRIAN (ADREAN)  HAGAMAN (HEGEMAN) of my line.

There are two references regarding ADRIAN HAGAMAN:

1.  Notation, “From Congressional Library as Washington.”

ADRIAN HAGAMAN and CATRINA, his wife came from Amsterdam, Holland in 1650.  He settled at Flatbush, Long Island – bought land there, was magistrate there many years.  In 1661, he was Schsut (schout) fiscal (sheriff) of five Dutch towns. He died in 1672.

His children were:

Joseph, Hendrickus, Jacobus, Abraman, DENYSE, Isaac, Benjamin, Elizabeth, John.

2.  Notation, “From Bergens early settlers of King’s County.”

ADRIAN HAGAMAN emigrated about 1650 from Holland, married Catherine _______,

died 1672.  About 1653 he resided in New Amsterdam (New York City) and April 25, 1661, he obtained a patent for fifty morgens with plain and meadow land in addition in Flatbush, where he removed April 29, 1668.  Catherine, his wife joined the Dutch Reformed Church of New York to which place she appears to have removed.

Issue:

Joseph, Henrious, Jacobus (baptized March 9, 1653 in New Amsterdam), Abraham, DENYSE, Isaac, Benjamin, Elizabeth (who married Tobias Ten Eyck, April 12, 1684), John, (married Fennestrye DeVries Titus in 1692.  (DeVries – Dutch; Titus – English)

Note spelling of surname.

In all our records it is shown as HAGAMAN but there is a reference back a generation or two ago that the spelling was originally HEGEMAN in the old country.  Why and when the spelling was changed is unclear.

The above data is compiled from available family records; it is incomplete, sketchy, and possible erroneous in the earlier generations because of the meager records.  The least that can be said is that it furnishes a starting point to establishment of our line back to Adrian Hagaman (Hegeman).
